Welcome to Toronto – or as some refer to it, the 416, also known as T-Dot, or even the Six. Whatever name you choose, the largest city in Canada leaves a lasting impression on visitors and residents alike. Its skyline alone is unforgettable. Boasting the largest free-standing structure in North America, the iconic CN Tower rises 1,815 feet off the ground and is visible to staff working in Toronto at the <a href="https://www.ef.com/"> EF Education First office </a>.

Toronto’s streets are more like a real wilderness than a concrete jungle. Nearly 18% of Toronto’s area is devoted to parks and forests. Trinity-Bellwoods offers serene picnic spots (and albino squirrel sightings), and High Park blooms with cherry blossom trees when the weather gets warm. The many hiking trails and ferry trips to the Toronto islands provide favorite summertime activities for locals. Cars aren’t allowed on any of the islands, so many people bring bikes (as well as beach towels for a swim in Lake Ontario).

Once you’ve hiked the city’s trails, you can return to civilization and travel the culinary world. Toronto is a proud multicultural city, with over 170 languages represented in the region, and that’s also reflected in its restaurants. For example, the Danforth neighborhood is famous for Greek food, Little Italy has wood-fired pizza, and Chinatown’s restaurants serve up fresh dumplings, noodles, and dim sum. Of course, there are also Canadian food staples, like poutine, a french-fry dish covered in gravy and cheese curds.

During winter, Toronto stays warm with a series of interconnected tunnels underground. The PATH is an underground pedestrian walkway connecting nearly 70 buildings. You can do errands, go to the gym, shop for clothes, or grocery shop without ever having to step outside. These tunnels extend below the EF office, so commuters taking the subway system can avoid the cold all winter! EF’s Toronto office is on two floors, with available roles primarily in <a href="https://www.eftours.ca/">EF Educational Tours </a> Canada and <a href="https://www.eftours.ca/">EF Go Ahead Tours</a>. The “commons area” is a favorite community spot in the office, where EFers working in Toronto gather for town halls, board game nights, or karaoke parties. You can even take a mini tour of Canada whenever you meet, as each conference room is named after a Canadian city. “Let’s meet in Moose Jaw in ten!” is not an uncommon phrase.

EF’s office is in the Yorkville neighborhood, well-known for good food, shopping, and concerts. In the summer EFers working in Toronto enjoy lunch breaks at the nearby park and catch one of the free public jazz concerts. In the winter, the park transforms into an ice sculpture festival with a festive light show.

Festivals are popular throughout the year in Toronto. For example, the Caribana festival, which celebrates the food and culture of the Caribbean, is the largest cultural festival in North America. And, in September, the annual Toronto International Film Festival is one of the world’s largest publicly attended film festivals.

What is the commute like?

I take the TTC (the Toronto Transit Commission subway) downtown. The station is right under our office building, so you don't even have to go outside in winter! In the summer, I can bike to work on a protected bike lane.

Favorite things about Toronto?

The nature! There's High Park, the waterfront, multiple botanical gardens... plenty of places to go for walks that will make you forget you're in a major city. When I first moved here, my partner and I went for a walk and ended up in the beautiful neighborhood of Yorkville. You can find so many cool places just by walking.

What do you love about your EF office?

I love where we are located—especially when it comes to food. You will often want to buy lunch since so many good food options are nearby.

Neighborhood recommendations:

I live in The Beaches (also known as 'The Beach'). The Beaches runs from Neville Park to Woodbine Avenue and gets its name due to the multiple public beaches running along Lake Ontario. We have a boardwalk, public parks, and off-leash dog areas. If you’re looking for roommates, the 'Palz' network is run by local volunteers and has groups for almost every topic—Helping Zone, Pet Zone, Trading Zone, etc. It's a great spot to find other locals and post about roommates!

What is the commute like?

My commute is about 20-30 minutes. First I grab a bus to the subway line, and then ride right to Bay Station.

Favorite things about Toronto?

My favorite spots include Allan Gardens, Glen Stewart Ravine, and the Toronto Necropolis. Nature is a big focus - many tiny forests, ravines, beach fronts, and parks are scattered throughout downtown.

What do you love about your EF office?

All roads lead to EF Toronto. We have a gym in the building and a park right behind us with outdoor seating and regular festivals that are held there - lights and ice sculptures in the winter, jazz musicians in the summer, and more! We're also super close to the ROM (Royal Ontario Museum) and the U of T campus - a great spot to find cherry blossoms in the spring.

What is the commute like?

I live about a 10-minute walk away from the office. Toronto is an extremely walkable city. I can walk almost anywhere I need—from the grocery store to the library, to work, and even to my favorite dance studio. If you live outside the city center, there are subway lines, too.

What are your favorite things about Toronto?

I love how Toronto integrates nature into such a big city—whether it’s the greenspaces downtown, small forests, or farmer's markets. Toronto is also a food lover's paradise. With Canada's beautiful mosaic of cultures, you can truly see them reflected in the flavors you'll find here. You can travel the world by taste without flying out of the city.

What do you love about your EF office?

I love our common space! It's a great spot to chat, take advantage of our office snacks, and hang out. Anyone will tell you that one of the best things about working at EF is the people, and this space really allows us to connect after a day of opening the world through education.

I’d recommend Yonge Eglinton, University of Toronto, Harbord Village, Koreatown/Little Italy, or Cabbagetown.

What is the commute like?

I cycle to work—it takes me roughly 25 minutes. On days when I take the TTC, it takes about 30 minutes. If you live outside of Toronto, there are regional transit options, like the GO train. If you use public transit a lot, get a monthly TTC pass; it lets you take any public transportation in the city for good value.

What are your favorite things about Toronto?

We're one of the world’s most multicultural cities, which means you can get any food your heart desires. We're also a great music city; most bands/artists stop in Toronto on tour. My other tip is to get a library card! Toronto has the second-best library system in the entire world, so if you like to read (or listen to audiobooks, watch movies, etc.), this is a must-have.

What do you love about your EF office?

We're on the two main subway lines, so getting here is easy. It’s a safe neighborhood and close to a lot of great food options.

Hear ye, hear ye! Calling all history fans, sports enthusiasts, and adventurers alike to the historic east coast U.S. city of Boston, Massachusetts. Paul Revere may have ridden through these cobblestoned streets to warn that the British army, dressed in red, was coming, but pink now dominates the city landscape. A sign of summer is the return of <a href="https://www.ef.com/wwen/blog/we-are-ef/sailing-pink-in-support-of-community-boating-inc-cbi/">sailboats</a> gliding across the Charles River, boasting <a href="https://www.ef.com/">EF Education First’s</a> Hello Pink. 
Alongside its prominence in American history, Boston is known for its beloved sports teams. While the Red Sox play baseball at Fenway Park, the Bruins hockey and Celtics basketball teams draw crowds at TD Garden — a large entertainment arena adjacent to <a href="https://www.thehuboncauseway.com/">The Hub on Causeway</a>, a popular food and shopping destination, which are both directly across the river from EF’s North American headquarters in Cambridge.  
EF’s newest Boston office opened its doors in 2014, although we’ve had a presence in the area since the 1990s when EF shared a building with Hult International Business School. In the past 40 years, the campus has expanded to include EF’s new 10-story office building and a school residency hall, Hult House. Hult International Business School remains in its original location, where the entrance features a piece of the Berlin Wall. The piece was given to Bertil Hult, the founder of EF, for his 50th birthday from EFers at the Boston office. The shared campus offers amenities like a gym, rock wall, and multiple Lingo Cafe locations, including a full-service bar, coffee bar, and two restaurants on the banks of the Charles River. Lingo is a favorite spot for team members to meet up for drinks or split a bowl of delicious tater tots.  
Recognizable for its iconic glass waterfall cascading down the facade, EF’s Boston office is home to approximately 1,000 team members working in various roles to help open the world through education. The EF businesses and associated organizations at this office focus on international and domestic tours, exchange programs, marketing, technology, and sales… to name a few!  
As New England’s biggest city, Boston provides visitors and residents with an array of entertainment. From buttery lobster rolls at Faneuil Hall, world-class art museums in Back Bay, and luxury shopping on Newbury Street — there’s so much to do that it’s hard to know where to begin. So, we asked EFers in Boston to share what they love about their city and their best advice for living and working here!

Neighborhood recommendations:  
I have lived in four neighborhoods: Union Square (Somerville), East Somerville, North End, and East Boston. Somerville is great for meeting friendly people and is an easy commute into the office. When I moved from Florida, I found a good community living there. East Boston is an up-and-coming neighborhood where you can get spacious apartments near the city. 
What is the commute like? 
From Union Square and East Somerville, you can take the T, the nickname for Boston’s public transportation train system, and walk from the nearest station. East Boston is about a 45-minute commute, but once you get used to the city life here, you’ll realize that 45-minutes is how much time it takes to get anywhere using public transportation.  
Favorite things about Boston?  
Every season offers you something new to do so you never get bored. As a Floridian, where we only have summer, this is what I enjoy the most! From checking out the different neighborhoods on a weekend bike ride to kayaking on the Charles River or visiting the National Seashore in Cape Cod, there is something here for everyone.  
What do you love about your EF office? 
Honestly, I feel like a sunflower because I am energized by the amount of natural light we get in the office. The energy of the people around me and the energy that comes into the building is my favorite!  
 
<h3>Alex, EF Go Ahead Tours </h3>
Neighborhood recommendations: 
I just moved to Boston recently, and I love the entire Cambridge area. To find roommates, I’ve successfully used Facebook groups, Instagram, Twitter, and even Craigslist. 
What is the commute like?  
I currently commute to & from Sharon (near Foxborough), roughly a 45–75-minute drive. The Boston traffic can be unpredictable, but I am fortunate enough to commute to work with my partner, who works for EF Ultimate Break.  
Favorite things about Boston?  
I absolutely love Faneuil Hall and watching Celtics games at TD Garden. I also like getting restaurant recommendations from those who consider themselves “locals” to Massachusetts! 
What do you love about your EF office?  
I love everything about the EF Boston office, so it’s hard to pick just one thing! But, I love the central location and, of course –– Lingo. Everything they make is incredible, and they put a lot of thought into the ingredients and dishes.  
 
<h3>Noa, <a href="https://www.efexploreamerica.com/">EF Explore America</a> </h3>
Neighborhood recommendations:  
I was looking in the South Boston area (also called “Southie”) and found an open room in a five-bedroom apartment. It was great because I could make new friends and didn’t have to furnish a new apartment! I recommend the following Facebook groups: “South Boston Housing, Rooms, Apartments, Sublets, Roommates” and “Boston Roommates.” 
What is the commute like?  
My commute from Southie is a four-minute bus ride to the T Station, a seven-minute ride on the Red Line, a switch to the Orange Line for about 10 minutes, and then an eight-minute walk to work. I like moving around, so I don’t mind the switches. My total commute can range from 30 minutes to 45 minutes. I recommend people look where the T can take you and what commute you will be comfortable with! Every part of the city has its own vibe. Ask around to see what would fit with your lifestyle. 
Favorite things about Boston?  
The beach in Southie! I also love visiting Castle Island, going to the Seaport for rooftop restaurants, and going to sports games.
What do you love about your EF office?  
The windows! I know this might be a small thing, but I work well in daylight — it brightens everyone’s mood. Lingo is also GREAT for lunch and snacks whenever I need it. I also love the communal couches and seating areas on every floor when I need a quiet brain break. 
 
<h3>SB, <a href="https://www.eftours.com/">EF Educational Tours</a> </h3>
Neighborhood recommendations: 
I recommend Lynn, Allston, Somerville, and Cambridge. For LGBTQ+ friendly options, I recommend Queer Housing Boston & Trans Housing Boston. If you find a good apartment, move on it fast! Properties come and go very quickly. 
What is the commute like? 
I take the B train on the Green Line — it takes me just under an hour to get to the office from Allston. Alternatively, it is only a 20-minute bike ride!  
Favorite things about Boston?  
I love Fenway Park, the Esplanade, and the North End for its incredible Italian food. In addition, the Boston Public Library in Copley Square is an amazing spot to work and learn about the history of the city. 
What do you love about your EF office?  
The building is structurally beautiful, and I love the different atrium seating spaces. The locker rooms are great if you plan to work out at the gym or bike into the office. Lingo is also an amazing space for networking and getting to know your colleagues better.  
 
<h3>Lexi, EF Education First  </h3>
Neighborhood recommendations:  
Somerville is a wonderful, diverse community. There is a mixture of families and young people with plenty of activities, outdoor spaces, and community events. I recommend the community message board here at EF, as folks are always posting about rooms and spaces for rent. Once you have a spot, I recommend joining the various “Everything is Free” or “Buy/Sell” pages on Facebook to help decorate and fill out your space. 
What is the commute like?  
When I drive, the traffic can be heavy since I come from the city’s western side. But when I bike, it’s just beautiful!  
Favorite things about Boston? 
I feel at home every single time I drive back to Boston. It is gritty and hardworking, but it also has something for everyone. If you are willing to put yourself out there and join a new club or group –– you will meet people you share something with! Be open to new people and spaces, and you will find your groove.  
What do you love about your EF office?  
The people. I love the humans I work with and the mission of the company. Many professional development opportunities are provided to us, and there’s a great community environment. And, personally, the number of plants around is just “happifying”!

Neighborhood recommendations:  
I live in Coolidge Corner in Brookline. I love the area! It’s very close to downtown, so I am just a quick T ride away from being in the city.  
What is the commute like?  
I take the T! 
Favorite things about Boston?  
I love the walkability, food, public transportation, and fun things to do within and outside the city. If you’re coming from a warm environment, bring lots of lotion. It’s my best friend in the winter. 
What do you love about your EF office? 
Everyone I work with is amazing, making coming into the office super fun. It’s nice having a community of people who understand what you are doing and can help answer any questions you have. Having Lingo for breakfast, lunch, and happy hour is fantastic. The views from the office are incredible.

I’d recommend Brighton or Allston –– especially for those relocating their families.  
What is the commute like?  
My commute is 20-30 minutes, and it’s a scenic drive along the Charles River. In addition, I get to see the rowing teams practice and pass the prestigious MIT campus.  
Favorite things about Boston?  
I love living in Brighton because it gives a quiet neighborhood feel while having the amenities of a city. Many daycares, restaurants, music venues, and parks are there. These things are important to me as a mom.  
What do you love about your EF office?  
I love that North Point Park is right outside of the office. We take my son there when I get off work sometimes. I also love the general location and walking proximity to the North End. And, of course, the non-stop views!

Things to know about living in boston

Between the plains of America’s Midwest and the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains is Colorado’s state capital, Denver — a city where metropolitan meets wilderness. The atmosphere may be thin at one mile above sea level, but it’s filled with a passion for exploration. Known as “the City of Doers,” Denver’s adventurous spirit and sense of community make it a perfect home for <a href="https://www.ef.com/">EF Education First</a>. 
Denver was founded during the gold rush of the 1800s, as people across the United States traveled to the region hoping to find fortune in the mountain’s minerals. The city has hosted millions of travelers by horseback, train, or car. Though it has outgrown its “Old West” origins, remnants of the era are still found in its downtown architecture and famous railroad station, Union Station.  
Modern-day Denver is known for its museums, food scene, and, more recently, love for community-organized sports. The socially focused sports leagues provide great opportunities to meet new people and grow a sense of community. And for those looking for professional teams to root for, there’s the Denver Broncos football team, Denver Nuggets basketball team, or Denver Rockies baseball team.  
The nature museum, art museum, and historical center offer visitors educational information about the city. Before the first settlers arrived, the Cheyenne, Arapahoe, and Ute tribes lived on the land that Denver now occupies. Indigenous art and more about tribe history in the region can be found at the Denver Art Museum and History Colorado Museum. 
Beyond the city limits, Rocky Mountain National Park offers hiking, kayaking, and camping in the summer months. Those that don’t mind the high altitude can try doing a “14er,” which means hiking to an elevation of 14,000 feet. When the first snowstorm arrives, the outdoor fun continues with world-renowned skiing in the towns of Aspen and Breckenridge.  
For music fans, Red Rocks Amphitheater is also a short trip away and is loved for its unique outdoor concert venue. The venue is the “only naturally-occurring, acoustically perfect amphitheater in the world.”* The famous acts that have performed here include U2, the Roots, and Stevie Nicks. But, as is the case for most things in Denver, even the music scene has something for everyone. 
If you’re searching for companies in Denver that provide a fusion of city life and the outdoors even within the office, EF has you covered. EF first opened in Denver in 2007 and moved to a newly renovated space in the downtown area in 2020. The office was designed to highlight the city’s proximity to the Rocky Mountains. The main staircase mimics the trees in a forest, and the brown, green, and terra cotta color scheme reflects the earthy Colorado environment. Large floor-to-ceiling windows fill the open lounge spaces with Colorado sunshine (which Denver gets 300 days a year) – making for a cozy start or end to the day with a cup of espresso from the cantina. For after-work activities, EFers can take in the Rocky Mountain views from the office rooftop, lounge by the nearby South Platte River, or grab dinner with friends at restaurants next door.

Neighborhood recommendations: 
I recommend Lower Highland (LoHi), Five Points, and River North Art District (RiNo). Capitol Hill (referred to as “Cap Hill” by locals) is a good neighborhood if you don’t have a car. If you’re looking for roommates, try searching for “Denver Housing/Subleasing” pages on Facebook! 
What is the commute like? 
I live close to the office, which gives me options for my commute. If I walk, it will take 25-35 minutes. If I drive, it takes me about 25 minutes. But if I bike, it only takes 20 minutes as I live close to the Cherry Creek River Trail, which makes the ride easy! Another great option is scootering, which takes about 15 minutes and usually costs $5 roundtrip. 
Favorite things about Denver? 
It is impossible to be bored here – there are millions of things that Denver and the surrounding areas have to offer. 
What do you love about your EF office? 
I love the people and the rooftop!  
 
<h3>Allie, <a href="https://www.eftours.com/">EF Educational Tours</a> </h3>
Neighborhood recommendations: 
LoHi is popular with young millennials and Gen Z – it’s trendy, and you can walk to work. The Highlands are more residential but close to restaurants and shops. If you’re looking for the most affordable neighborhood, I’d recommend Cap Hill — it’s charming with older buildings, but there’s no parking if you have a car. Try to move in January as some apartment complexes will give you discounts. I used Craigslist to find my roommates. 
What is the commute like? 
You can walk, bike, bus, or drive. If you take the Denver Regional Transportation District bus (known as RTD), you can pay for tickets on your phone with the RTD app in advance. 
Favorite things about Denver? 
It’s accessible to the mountains, and the city has a good sense of community. There are many transplants working in Denver that are open to meeting new people and making new friends. I also feel safe! 
What do you love about your EF office? 
I love the rooftop, the espresso machine, and how bright it is. It’s a cool space, with private conference rooms for one person if they need to take a call. The office is close to a lot of great restaurants, too.   
 
<h3>Isabella, EF Go Ahead Tours </h3>
Neighborhood recommendations: 
If you’re looking for houses in the summer, be aware that this is a very popular time to move. However, you might have better luck finding an apartment since so many are being built! Also, you don’t need to live in the Lower Downtown area to be part of the action –many great neighborhoods are nearby. Facebook is helpful when looking for places to live. Try groups like “Denver Professionals/Creatives Apartments,” “Roommates & Sublets,” or the “Denver Creative Housing – Rentals, Rooms, Roommates, Sublets.”  
What is the commute like? 
Most commutes are under 20 minutes! I lived in Baker for a bit, and my drive was 12 minutes. I now live in the West Highlands, and my drive is barely 7 minutes.  
Favorite things about Denver? 
There are outdoorsy things to do, a great music scene, fun nightlife, and yummy restaurants. I also LOVE that the second it gets warm out, people want to be outside. Whether it’s volleyball at Washington Park, hanging out at Cheesman Park, or driving under two hours for a mountain getaway – the biggest problem in Denver is saying yes to too many things.  
What do you love about your EF office? 
I love the espresso machine, AMAZING rooftop views, the plants, and most of all, the people. This is the best place to work in Denver! 
 
<h3>Kieran, EF Go Ahead Tours </h3>
Neighborhood recommendations: 
Cap Hill and LoHi have great food and are walkable to nearby activities. If you’re looking to live outside the city, Lakewood has lots of options. And if restaurants and art are more your scene, you’ll like RiNo! 
What is the commute like? 
My typical commute from Cap Hill is a 10-minute drive through downtown, but there are many ways to get to the office. So many people walk, bike, scooter, skateboard, or even take the train — we’re just a short walk from Union Station. 
Favorite things about Denver? 
Living in Denver is a combination of natural beauty meeting city life. You’ll be driving downtown, turning a corner, and be greeted by a stunning view of the mountains. The city offers so many outdoor spaces to visit, even for those who don’t participate in winter sports (like myself). Also, don’t forget your reusable bags! There’s a 10-cent surcharge per plastic bag in stores. 
What do you love about your EF office?  
I love the natural elements incorporated into the space – the front desk is a curated collection of earth from across Colorado. The big windows that let in tons of natural light and the rooftop deck are among my favorite spaces. Of course, the espresso machine doesn’t hurt, either!

Howdy, partner! Welcome to Austin, the capital city of Texas. EF’s newest North American office is just a short walk down South Congress. Opened in 2020, the <a href="https://www.ef.com/wwen/blog/we-are-ef/ef-office-in-austin-texas/">EF Austin office</a> was designed to reflect its environment by incorporating locally sourced materials and community artwork into the interior design. Hand-painted murals on the office walls depict modern versions of regional plants, while a hot pink “Howdy” sign pays tribute to the neon signs visible from the office terrace. PET plastic acoustic panels and chair swings divide the office into collaborative spaces where EFers can connect, brainstorm, or meet up for after-work tacos.  
Austin is a food city – tacos being the menu item of choice and food trucks the best location to order them from. With an average of 300 days of sunshine per year, many of the city’s restaurants, communal spaces, and activities center around the outdoors. On the weekends, many EFers can be found kayaking at Lady Bird Lake or biking at Zilker Park.  
In the evenings, Austin lives up to its other famous tagline, the “Live Music Capital of the World.”  Along one street, you’ll find a jukebox of venues featuring live performances for every music taste. Cowboy boots stomp across wooden floors to country tempos set for line dancing; jazz lounges boast brass quartets playing for candle-lit tables; and famous bands headline the longest-running music television show in American history, <a href="https://austincitylimits.com/">Austin City Limits</a>. If one musical act doesn’t suit you, there’s another world-class performance next door. 
Life in the second largest state in America can move faster than a Texas rodeo. So to help corral the best advice, we asked EFers to share their favorite tips and tricks for navigating Austin.

Neighborhood Recommendations:  
The best neighborhoods are East Austin, South Lamar, South Shore, or South Austin. 
What is the commute like?  
I usually walk! It is a 40-minute walk on the boardwalk, which means I get to see the water and skyline as I get closer to South Congress. The trail in the morning is also full of people walking their dogs, which is the best way to start my day before I get to the office. 
Favorite things about Austin?  
Before moving to Austin, I would never go out to eat. But the food here is SO good that you will find me trying a new spot at least once a week. You can’t go wrong between the amazing food and the vibey restaurants. I also love how active Austin is. With great weather year-round, it is so easy to get outside. My first purchase after moving down here was a paddleboard. It’s one of my favorite ways to get out on the water!   
What do you love about your EF office?  
Almost everyone comes in person and loves chatting. The office is collaborative across teams and products which makes it easy to get to know everyone.

Neighborhood Recommendations:  
I live in South Lamar, which makes it convenient for shopping and running errands. Riverside is right along the water for those that enjoy the walking paths, or paddle boarding on Ladybird Lake. South First Street, near the office, has a ton of restaurants and food truck parks for the EF foodies out there. It all depends on what you’re looking for! When I discovered I was moving, I replied to a few roommate posts on the Austin Roommate’s Facebook page. Some were looking for a roommate to apartment hunt with, while others had a room they were looking to fill. 
What is the commute like?  
I drive to the office, so it takes me about 20 minutes door-to-door to get to the office each day. Nice and easy! I’d never been to Austin before I decided to move here to work at the new EF office, so I’m glad someone told me early on that the main method of transportation is driving.
Favorite things about Austin?  
My favorite thing about the city is how many amazing local restaurants, cafes, and shops there are. I love going to weekend farmer’s markets & maker’s markets and then grabbing a breakfast taco at a nearby food truck. I follow a few Instagram accounts, which are great for updating weekly events and new spots to check out!
What do you love about your EF office?  
I love being a part of a new, smaller office because it’s been easy to build connections and get to know more people at EF! Having moved to a brand new city where I didn’t know anyone, it’s nice having other people in the same boat to explore with. I also love how the design of the office is both reflective of EF and the artistic nature of Austin. Last spring, I was able to sit out on one of our balconies and listen to the live music from the SXSW festival during my lunch break which was such a unique experience!

Neighborhood Recommendations: 
East Austin has little shops, restaurants, bars, and cute neighborhoods. Plus, it’s only a 10-minute drive from the office. South Austin is up-and-coming with breweries, restaurants, and new developments. There are also a variety of houses for rent when you travel further South and East. 
What is the commute like?  
My commute is a very easy 10-minute drive! I will say you most likely need to have a car to live in Austin. Everything is spread out in terms of grocery shopping, activities, etc. But the commute isn’t long when you live within the city limits. 
Favorite things about Austin?  
There’s never a shortage of things to do! Whether it’s getting a smoothie and walking along the water, joining a free workout class, or brewery hopping on a Saturday, I’m never bored. The weather is hot in the summer, but the beautiful winter months make up for it. I was completely overwhelmed with the number of things to do and people to meet, so my best advice is to take it one day at a time. 
What do you love about your EF office? 
My favorite part about the Austin office is the people. Whether you’re making an afternoon coffee or eating lunch on one of the balconies, someone will always strike up a conversation and ask how you’re doing. It’s made it so much easier to relocate from Boston to Austin when I didn’t know anyone.

Neighborhood Recommendations:  
I love living in the Arboretum/Domain area. It’s a safe and slow-paced neighborhood with lots of shopping and hiking trails. When I moved, I joined the Facebook group “Moving to Austin” for neighborhood advice.
What is the commute like?  
I drive to work! You can get anywhere in the city within 20 minutes.
Favorite things about Austin?  
The food is amazing – you can’t go wrong at any restaurant. Plus, you can always find a concert to go to. I also love going to small watering holes for swimming. Bull Creek or Turkey Creek is usually less crowded than Lady Bird Lake!
What do you love about your EF office?  
I love how many people I’ve met from working in the office! The open space and office events provide a lot of opportunities to get to know your colleagues in different positions/products!

Meet the austin office

If you had a chance to talk to your future self, what would you ask? Maybe you’d want to know if you got that promotion at work, or if you still had the same group of friends. In celebration of <a href="https://ef.com/">EF Education First’s</a> Women’s History Month, we asked team members to consider this question through the lens of having already lived to see the “future” by having a conversation with their younger selves. Through triumphs, failures, and changes, many of the responses reflected on the unexpected paths that life takes us on. Whether or not they ended at the destination they set out for, our team members highlight the importance of admiring the journey that leads you to the person that you become along the way.   
<h3>Sally-Anne, United Kingdom </h3>
What did you want to be when you grew up? Where are you now? 
I have always been very creative with a love for making things, and I remember wanting to work for Jim Henson’s creature workshop making puppets. I am instead a Project Manager, which also weirdly enough makes perfect sense as I have always been the ‘organizer’ of the group at work or at home.  
What do you think your childhood self would most admire about you? 
I think my childhood self would look at me and admire my independence and the life I have built. She might be surprised at the domesticity of it — I always imagined I would be more of an adventurer — but I hope she would not be disappointed. I’m certainly not!

What did you want to be when you grew up? Where are you now? 
As a kid, I wanted to be a paleontologist or a scientist. Mostly, I wanted to be a singer, and I was determined to do that until some point during my first year of university. So, I switched to major in marketing, which I am working in now. 
What do you think your childhood self would most admire about you? 
I think my childhood self would admire the living abroad I have done in the last quarter of my life. I had to learn how to do adult things like laundry and paying bills while also adjusting to life in a new country with different customs — away from friends and family.

What did you want to be when you grew up? Where are you now?
I would tell my parents I wanted to be an astronaut my mom would laugh and say, “Si aqui no te encuentro alla menos!” (“If I can’t find you here let alone in space”). I may not be an astronaut, but I have fulfilled the main need of wanting to see the world from a different perspective. My career at EF has taken me to so many places I never could have imagined as a kid.
What do you think your childhood self would most admire about you? 
I think my younger self would be proud to know that even though we were knocked down a couple of times we always came back stronger. We made it to a private university with a full-ride scholarship, we have lived in 7 countries, we work at a multi-national company in Panama, and, more importantly, we are helping to pave the way for other women of color to succeed.

What did you want to be when you grew up? Where are you now? 
When I was younger, I wanted to be a pediatrician! I found out science wasn’t my strong suit, but communications is. Now I get to talk to coworkers and travelers every day and lift them up. 
What do you think your childhood self would most admire about you? 
I think my younger self would admire how much more confident and assertive I’ve become — and that I feel respected in my job and day-to-day life.

What did you want to be when you grew up? Where are you now? 
I wanted to be an Interventional Radiologist. Now, I’m focusing more on a happy, healthy, simple life rather than what my occupational title is. 
What do you think your childhood self would most admire about you? 
What I admire about myself now is that I am taking my personal happiness and health into the forefront of my priorities. I can do hard things and recognize my own wants and feelings rather than morphing into what others expect.

Happy… and happy!  
What do you think your childhood self would most admire about you? 
Younger Allie was quite shy and nervous about being alone. I think she would admire how I’ve made many lovely connections with others and speak in front of groups with less trepidation. Younger Allie is proud of me now!

What did you want to be when you grew up? Where are you now? 
From a very young age, I always wanted to be a Fashion Designer. Then, with the help of a counselor, I decided to study Law, and I loved it! Due to the situation in my country of origin, I had to emigrate, and when I arrived in another country — it was very difficult to continue with my career. I started to follow my passion for photography and design, and sometime later I did a master’s in marketing management. There were many changes in my career, but those changes brought me to where I am today. 
What do you think your childhood self would most admire about you? 
I never changed who I was, what I liked, or what I wanted to be just to please other people.

Austin, Texas is known for its love of live music, amazing food scene, and self-proclaimed weirdness. It’s a city for those who embrace opportunities and adventure, making it the ideal location for <a href="https://www.ef.com/wwen/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">EF Education First’s</a> fourth U.S. office. Construction began in the spring of 2020 and, despite the challenges of COVID-19, the project finished on schedule. The office officially opened to team members in mid-2021, trading in the EF “hello” for an EF “howdy.”
For each new EF school or office, there is a vision that drives the design and functionality of the space. When creating the Austin office, the goal for the entire EF Properties team, including the in-house architecture and design team, was to emphasize community engagement and sustainability. To do this, the in-house team worked with a variety of architects, designers, and businesses, many of them based in Austin. The team also utilized locally sourced materials to craft a space that embraces the free spirit of Texas’ state capital.
Surrounding the downtown area of Austin is an eclectic array of neighborhoods that each have their unique charm. EF’s office is in the historic neighborhood of South Congress, also known as SoCo, home to famous music venues, restaurants, and iconic neon signs. This lively energy was the primary source of inspiration when planning the interior design of the office.

EF’s design team worked with local artists to create a variety of functional art pieces that helped mimic Austin’s landscape indoors. Muralist Andrew Manning hand-painted vibrant graphics along the walls to playfully depict the desert plant life of the region. And to help the plant theme come to life, <a href="https://www.tortoiseclubgardens.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Tortoise Club Gardens</a> curated a live plant installation of cacti and succulents in the office’s entryway. Together, they create a space of both the real and imaginary where creativity and collaboration can flourish. Other office areas like the swings, sofa alcoves, outdoor terraces, and large café invite EFers to gather for meetings or discuss where to find the best breakfast taco in the city.
Additionally, EF worked with local printers, contractors, millworkers, architects, and furniture designers to create an office that was singular and sustainable. The reception desk was created out of handmade terracotta breeze blocks from Austin’s sister city in Saltillo, Mexico, and purchased locally at <a href="https://clayimports.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Clay Imports</a>. Austin fabricator <a href="https://www.litmusindustries.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Litmus Industries</a> crafted the desk to EF’s design, pairing the terracotta blocks with locally sourced Pecan wood with a natural edge.
Throughout the office, EF team members have a range of workspaces to choose from, from big brainstorming areas to quiet nooks. In collaboration with <a href="https://verygoodandproper.co.uk/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Very Good & Proper</a>, custom workstations feature recycled PET plastic acoustic panels and are designed to be easily separated into their material components for easy repair, re-use, or recycling.

Austin has something for everyone’s passions. Called the “Live Music Capital of the World,” the city is known for renowned festivals like “South by Southwest” and being instrumental in the growth of the folk, blues, and jazz genres. Also, the television show “Austin City Limits” is filmed here, which lays claim to being the longest-running music series in <a href="https://www.austintexas.org/austin-insider-blog/post/austin-for-music-lovers/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">American television history</a>. Music trivia fans may even share a long list of famous musicians born in Austin, like Janis Joplin, Gary Clark Jr., and Willie Nelson. And for those looking for other artistic inspiration, there are many world-class museums to visit, such as the Blanton Museum of Art or the Harry Ransom Center, which has the earliest surviving photograph in existence.
Outside the city’s limits is an outdoor enthusiast’s playground, with activities like swimming, hiking, and kayaking — even bat watching. With an average of <a href="https://www.bestplaces.net/climate/city/texas/austin#:~:text=On%20average%2C%20there%20are%20228,average%2C%2079%20days%20per%20year" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">228 sunny days</a> (that’s about 7 and a half months!) per year, the weather favors those who love to be outside. Whether it’s tubing trips down the San Marcos River or paddleboarding on Lady Bird Lake, EFers are taking advantage of what the city has to offer. While the newest EF office captures the vibrancy of this exciting American city, it’s Austin’s friendly and inspiring atmosphere that truly speaks to everything EF stands for.
